Drug Medical Information
COMMON POISONS: PHENOL, WOOD ALCOHOL AND BENZENE
Phenol
Once phenol, known as carbolic acid, and related material like the cresols were common causes of poisoning. Now other antiseptics have been developed and have replaced phenol as a commonly-used germ-destroying material. Phenol is a dangerous caustic substance which damages tissue with which it comes in contact. Moreover, it is absorbed and then injures the body generally. When absorbed it affects the centers in the brain responsible for breathing and for the circulation of blood.
Contamination of the skin or clothing with phenol demands immediate attention. The clothing should be removed and the skin washed as soon as possible with warm water or 50 per cent alcohol. Artificial respiration may be necessary and also rest and warmth.
Wood Alcohol or Methanol
Poisoning with this industrial solvent may lead to blindness and death. Since it has been used as an antifreeze many deaths of drunkards have resulted from drinking antifreeze solution. The symptoms of wood alcohol poisoning are like those of ordinary drunkenness except for the symptoms that include blurring of vision or blindness. In treating wood alcohol poisoning, the stomach is washed out by having the person drink copious amounts of salt solution which is then vomited back. Afterward a saline cathartic is taken to wash out the bowel. Thiamin and nicotinamide and vitamin Ê are given to protect the nervous system. The pain, restlessness, or delirium should have prompt medical attention. The doctor may provide oxygen for breathing and necessary stimulation.
Benzene
Benzene is cheap and is widely used in industry as a solvent. Acute benzene poisoning is manifested by effects on the nervous system and on the blood. Chronic benzene poisoning, which comes on insidiously, injures the blood-forming organs, with lessening of the number of blood cells.
A person acutely poisoned should be removed immediately from contact with the benzene fumes. Artificial respiration is given, and the patient is put to bed and given the necessary treatment. Rescuers should wear masks to avoid getting poisoned themselves.
When chronic benzene poisoning has seriously damaged the blood-forming organs recovery is difficult. Large doses of vitamin Ñ are given. Liver extract and other aids to blood formation are frequently prescribed. All workers in industry where benzene is much used should have frequent examinations of the blood.
